In one of Colombia’s most remote locations, in the department of Guainía, you’ll find the Mavicure Hills, three towering rocks rising above the Colombian Amazon rainforest. With heights of up to 800 meters, and crossed by the winding and majestic Inírida River, these hills are home to ancient indigenous communities. Simply put, it’s one of the most isolated, yet incredible places in our country. These rocks are part of the Guyanese Shield, one of the oldest geological formations on the planet, found in the northeastern Amazon region.
This is a charming journey through the beautiful rivers of the Colombian Amazon rainforest, where you’ll visit the majestic Mavicure Hills and the nearby indigenous communities. The following route is a magical journey deep into the dense Amazon jungle, through its stunning and diverse rivers. Along the way, we’ll have the chance to experience the contrasts of the area, enjoy the brilliant, starry nights on its beaches, and wake up in this peaceful wilderness. You’ll also have the opportunity to hike one of the summits, bathe in its spectacular rivers, interact with indigenous communities, and observe the biological and cultural diversity of this wild and beautiful territory.

The camping night on the Mavicure Hills beaches depends on the time of year. When the river is high and the beaches disappear, we sleep in beds, hammocks, or tents in El Remanso, an indigenous community located right across from the Mavicure Hills.
We’ll kick off the adventure at Inírida airport, where we’ll meet the guide waiting to take us to the hotel. Once we check-in, we’ll rest and freshen up before heading out to Kenke. Depending on the arrival time, we’ll enjoy a typical regional lunch prepared by the local indigenous community, followed by a jungle tour where we’ll see the various traps used by the indigenous people for hunting and fishing. We’ll also learn about the variety of plants, including the famous Inírida flower, and its properties. In the afternoon, if the water level permits, we’ll enjoy a refreshing swim in the beautiful orange-colored waters. Later, we’ll return to the hotel for dinner and rest.

In the morning, we’ll navigate north along the Inírida River to Estrella Fluvial, a unique place where the Guaviare, Inírida, Atabapo, and Orinoco rivers converge. Here, we’ll witness the spectacular merging of black and white river waters. Afterward, we’ll visit Maviso, where we can swim in the red waters of the spectacular Atabapo River and enjoy its beautiful white sandy beaches. At noon, we’ll cross the river to reach Amanaven in the Vichada department, where we’ll have a typical regional lunch. After lunch, we’ll continue navigating along the Inírida River for about 3 hours until we catch sight of the majestic Mavicure Hills, with their breathtaking landscape. Along the way, we might spot various birds native to the region and watch the dance of the toninas (pink river dolphins). Once we reach the hills, we’ll visit the El Remanso community, where they’ll provide us with some comforts for our stay. Afterward, we’ll cross the Inírida River and set up our camp at the foot of the Mavicure Hills on their golden beaches. In the evening, we’ll swim in the river, take in the vast jungle views, and share dinner with the indigenous community, learning how they process casabe (cassava bread), a main food source in the Amazon. We’ll also observe the process of making catara, mañoco, and starch, edible products from the same root.

On day three, we’ll start the hike to the Mavicure Hill summit. The peaceful silence, different scents from the vegetation, and beautiful species along the way will make this journey a peaceful and relaxing one. Once at the summit, we’ll enjoy an incredible view of the vast Amazon jungle and the neighboring peaks, El Mono and El Pajarito. This spot is perfect for meditation, soaking in the energy of the rock, harmonizing, and giving thanks. After each traveler enjoys the summit, we’ll descend and take a boat to San Joaquín Canal, where we’ll visit its white sandy beaches and take a swim in its beautiful wine-colored waters. We’ll have lunch in the El Remanso community and then head to Caño Matraca to see the toninas (river dolphins) before wrapping up the day with a beautiful sunset in Puerto Inírida.

Flight duration Inírida – Bogotá: 1.5 hours
This is a physically demanding expedition. It’s ideal for mountaineers with previous experience in ascents over 4,000 or 5,000 meters. If you’ve done multi-day expeditions in cold and high-altitude conditions, you’ll be better prepared for this challenge.
We recommend a training program of 3 to 6 months, focused on cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, and altitude acclimatization. Activities like mountain hiking, trail running, and cycling are perfect.
Our team is equipped with satellite communication devices, first aid kits, and medical oxygen supplies at high-altitude camps. We also constantly monitor the physical condition of the participants.
