La Guajira is a fascinating territory located at the northernmost tip of South America, where arid land, dunes, salt flats, and the ocean come together to create a truly unique natural setting. During the journey, we will walk along the beaches of Cabo de la Vela, explore the Los Flamencos Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, and visit the traditional Manaure Salt Flats.

The itinerary also includes iconic places such as El Pilón de Azúcar and Rainbow Beach, landscapes that reflect the diversity, beauty, and strength of this extreme territory.

This is an adventure and exploration trip that includes long journeys in 4×4 vehicles across the desert of La Guajira. While the drives can be time-demanding, they offer unique landscapes and are an essential part of the overall experience.

Throughout the journey, we will pass through Wayuu communities, where it is common to encounter people living in highly vulnerable conditions who may ask for support. As an agency, SAWA provides basic supplies, but due to the number of communities visited along the route, it is important that each traveler also brings snacks, water, or non-perishable food items to share in a respectful manner.

We will make a planned stop at an appropriate location so travelers can purchase these items and carry them during the trip. In some sections of the route, community checkpoints are common, and having these supplies helps ensure a more respectful, conscious, and supportive interaction.

This trip is recommended for travelers with an open mindset, who enjoy understanding different realities and are comfortable with long journeys through the desert, appreciating both the beauty of the landscape and the cultural encounters that La Guajira offers.

EXPLORE LA GUAJIRA

ITINERARY

The journey begins in Riohacha at 7:30 a.m., after each traveler has enjoyed breakfast on their own. Our driver will then pick up the group at the hotel to start the adventure in a private 4×4 vehicle. Before departure, we will share some general recommendations for the route.

Our first stop will be in the village of Camarones (Riohacha), where we will visit the Los Flamencos Fauna and Flora Sanctuary. There, we will enjoy the beautiful spectacle of these pink birds while gliding through the mangroves on a traditional raft, surrounded by a peaceful and scenic natural setting.

After this experience, we will continue our journey toward Cabo de la Vela. Along the way, we will stop to enjoy a traditional regional lunch. We will then visit the Manaure Salt Flats, pass through Uribia, and cross the Carrizal Desert, before finally arriving at the long-awaited Cabo de la Vela.

In this magical place, we will enjoy the sea and its golden beaches, as well as breathtaking sunsets. We will hike up El Pilón de Azúcar, feeling the strong winds characteristic of the area during the walk, and end the afternoon with a spectacular sunset at the lighthouse viewpoint.

Dinner and overnight stay in Cabo de la Vela.

On this second and final day, we will explore the most iconic spots of Cabo de la Vela. We will start the morning with a nutritious breakfast, then head to El Pilón de Azúcar, where we’ll take in a spectacular view of the desert merging with the sea.

Later, we will visit Rainbow Beach, an ideal place to enjoy a cleansing swim in the warm waters of these unique shores. At midday, we will return to the ranchería for lunch and then begin our journey back to Riohacha, bringing our trip to a close.
