PARAMO DEL SOL
Paramo del Sol, also known as Paramo de Frontino, is a mountain complex located in the municipalities of Urrao, Caicedo, Abriaquí and Frontino Southwest of Antioquia region. Paramo del Sol has an extension of approximately 30 Km2 and 4.000 meters of altitude in its highest point, known as Alto Campanas.
This kind of ecosystem is highly important due to water production and because it is home for an important variety of flora and fauna, some of them endangered species such as spectacle bears and the beautiful frailejones –Espeletia Frontinoensis- a paramo-endemic vegetation than can only be found in this magical place.
The tour detailed bellow, is a beautiful hike that starts in the low part of the mountain complex aiming to reach the Alto Campanas by hiking our way up through cloud forests. Once we reach the highest point, we will have an spectacular panoramic of some of the mountains of Antioquia and Chocó, as well as the thick jungle that covers Las Orquídeas National Park.
Early in the morning and after breakfast we will start our day. We will take a 4×4 vehicle for about 30 minutes to a place called Chuscal, where we will start our hiking and where we will carry our luggage in the mules.
We will ascent through the Proaves Reserve path, where we will be able to go across cloud forests and a variety birds that live in that area. During our trip we will enjoy a typical lunch fiambre style, wrapped in bijao leaf. After around six hour we will arrive to a place known as Piedra del Oso where we will set up our camp and have some time to contemplate the beautiful landscape. In the evening we will have dinner and rest.

Our second day starts with a well deserved breakfast prepared by our guide. Afterwards we will hike up to Alto Campanas located 4.000 meters of high. From there we will have an spectacular view of the regions of Antioquia and Chocó, as well as the municipality of Urrao and its beautiful Penderisco Valley. We will spend enough time in Alto Campanas, so we will be able to enjoy the landscape, breath and connect to the beautiful natural surroundings. On our way back we will visit Campanas Lake to then go across wetlands, grasslands and frailejones in order to reach our camp site in La Piedra del Oso. We will have lunch and spend the afternoon contemplating the sun set between the mountains.

This is our last hiking day. We will descent from the mountain by a sector known as El Catorce, a different path to the one we took to ascent. We will go through the paramo and stop in a cloud forest to contemplate this majestic ecosystem for the last time. Downhill we will walk along the bank of a beautiful stream until we reach el Chuscal. There we will take a vehicle to take us back to Urrao and finish our experience gathered around lunch in a local restaurant.
