NEVADO SANTA ISABEL SUMMIT
LOS NEVADOS NATIONAL PARK
Los Nevados National Park is located on the central mountain range of the Colombian Andes and has an extension of 61.200 hectares, a maximum altitude of 5.321 meters (Nevado del Ruiz summit), and a minimum altitude of 2.600 meters at the Andean forests. The park is located between Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío and Tolima departments. Its wide geography features three volcanoes (Ruiz, Santa Isabel and Tolima), large paramo areas (alpine moorland), forests, lakes and rivers where many species of animals and plants live; some of theme endangered species.
A beautiful two days trip, for those who don’t have much time. We will visit the Otún Lake and climb up the Santa Isabel Nevado. The trip starts and ends in the cities of Pereira or Manizales.
The trip starts in Manizales or in Pereira, considering where the travelers are. At 6:00 a.m. we’ll pick them up at their hotels and start our trip up in a 4×4 vehicle to the mountains from Los Nevados National Park on the road that leads to El Cisne retreat, this road has a beautiful view of the High Andes’ woods decorated by farmer’s crops. During the drive up we’ll stop to have breakfast and then we’ll continue our way to the retreat where National Park’s staff will give us an informative talk and will help us register at the park. Then we’ll go on an acclimation walk to the Encantada Green lagoon, where we’ll be able to observe from up close the Santa Isabel snowcapped mountain and the beautiful moor’s ecosystem and flora. Back at the retreat we’ll enjoy a traditional farmer’s lunch and find the rooms where we’ll stay for the night. On the afternoon we’ll receive the hiking equipment and receive instructions from the guides to learn the proper care and handle of the equipment. At night we’ll enjoy a traditional dinner and get some rest for the climb the next day.

A few hours later we’ll experience sunrise from the top of the Colombian Andes, this will motivate our climb to the top. On the glacier we’ll equip ourselves with the necessary tools for the climb in the snow, then, if the weather and luck allow us, we’ll be enjoying a spectacular view from the top of the Santa Isabel snowcapped mountain, at approximately 5000 m high. On the way back, we’ll take the same road to Conejeras where the vehicle will be waiting to take us to Potosí.
