This excursion is a beautiful four-days trekking across Los Nevados National Park where we will enjoy the climb to Nevado del Tolima summit (5.240 meters), passing through the Cocora Valley, cloud forests, paramo ecosystem (alpine moorland), and sandy terrain.
NEVADO DEL TOLIMA SUMMIT
Los Nevados National Park is located on the central mountain range of the Colombian Andes and has an extension of 61.200 hectares, a maximum altitude of 5.321 meters (Nevado del Ruiz summit), and a minimum altitude of 2.600 meters at the Andean forests. The park is located between Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío and Tolima departments. Its wide geography features three volcanoes (Ruiz, Santa Isabel and Tolima), large paramo areas (alpine moorland), forests, lakes and rivers where many species of animals and plants live; some of theme endangered species.
This excursion is a beautiful four-days trekking to ascent to the Nevado del Tolima Summit (5,240 m) and enjoy the diverse of geography while walking through cloud forest, paramo, sandbanks and glaciers.
Our thrilling journey begins in the charming municipality of Salento, nestled in the heart of the Coffee Cultural Landscape and renowned for its picturesque beauty.
At 7 am, we will meet at a pre-arranged location for breakfast before boarding a private vehicle that will take us on a roughly 12-kilometer journey to the stunning Cocora Valley. Here, we will witness the majestic wax palms and the natural beauty that surrounds them.
After packing our belongings onto the mules, we will prepare to commence our ascent through lush fog-covered forests, crossing numerous streams that provide refuge to various bird species and plants.
As we continue our hike, we will arrive at the modest yet welcoming rural house known as “La Argentina,” which boasts a beautiful view of a canyon surrounded by green mountains cloaked in forests. At La Argentina, we will savor a hearty lunch and settle into our rooms. We will have the afternoon free to relax, explore the area, and engage with the warm-hearted family who resides there.

We will kick off the day with a nutritious breakfast before loading our belongings onto the mules. Afterward, we’ll embark on our hike towards the majestic Paramillo del Quindío. Before reaching its base, we will veer off towards a place known as La Línea, situated at an altitude of 4000 meters above sea level. From there, we’ll begin our descent until we reach La Playa farm, which is located at 3700 meters above sea level.
Once at La Playa, we’ll indulge in a satisfying lunch and take advantage of the afternoon to rest and organize the high-altitude gear that we’ll require for the following day of the expedition.
Later on, we’ll relish a delicious dinner and prepare ourselves for a well-deserved rest.

Our day begins early, at 12:00 pm, with a light breakfast. Subsequently, we commence our hike, immersing ourselves in the silence of the paramo, surrounded by impressive frailejones and other unique plants that characterize this region.
Gradually, we gain altitude and enter an area of rocky sands, where we bear witness to the sunrise. We continue ascending until we reach the glacier, where we equip ourselves with the necessary gear, such as helmets, crampons, ice axes, ropes, and harnesses, provided by our agency. Once ready, we begin the ascent on the snow, which will lead us to the summit.
The journey across the glacier takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach the summit, which stands at an altitude of 5,240 meters above sea level. From there, we enjoy a spectacular view that allows us to admire the other snow-capped peaks and paramos of the National Park.
After making the most of our experience at the summit, we commence the descent back to La Playa farm, where we will savor a well-deserved lunch and have the opportunity to rest.

After breakfast and load our luggage on the mules, we will initiate our descent to Cocora Valley. We will be going through a different rout than we ascended to allow us to enjoy others typical Andean’s landscapes. Once we reach the Cocora Valley we will take a vehicle to Salento, where our trip ends.

- + Cloths suitable for cold weather: waterproof jacket Gore- Tex kind, feathers or synthetic jacket, sweater, confortable hiking pants and an extra pair to sleep (we recommend thermic pants), thick socks (at least three pairs), gloves and hat that cover your ears.

The experience of being in such majestic place is very strong and challenging. The adequate companionship and the experience make the difference between having a very good time and not wanting to go back. Excellent place to connect with nature and excellent guide as well, which makes you fell save during the experience.
